Real Estate Fraud Case Former IPS Officer Amitabh Thakur Arrested in Uttar Pradesh, Sent to Judicial Custody

Former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Amitabh Thakur was arrested by the Lucknow police early Wednesday morning (December 10, 2025) in connection with a real estate fraud case. He was taken into custody around 2 a.m. at Shahjahanpur railway station, where he was traveling by train to New Delhi via Lucknow.

Thakur was produced before a Deoria court on December 10 and was subsequently remanded to judicial custody for 14 days.

According to the police, a case had been registered against him at the Deoria Sadar police station (Crime No. 1021/25) under sections 419, 420, 467, 468, 34, and 120B of the Indian Penal Code. He is accused of misusing his position as the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Deoria in 1999 to fraudulently acquire industrial land in his wife’s name using forged documents.

A police officer stated:
“A case had been registered against former IPS officer Amitabh Thakur… He was apprehended at Shahjahanpur railway station and subsequently produced before the court in Deoria.”

Thakur was brought to Deoria under heavy security arrangements. Before being taken to court, he also underwent a mandatory medical examination. During his appearance before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court, the former IPS officer—who is also known for his activism—claimed that those in power may be planning to harm him, alleging that he is targeted for consistently exposing irregularities and corruption in the government system.
