Anti-government protests by youth turned violent in Nepal on Monday. Massive protests were seen led by the youth against the ban imposed by the government on social media platforms. According to sources, 20 people died and about 500 people were injured during the protests.
In view of the violent protests, the Nepal government has withdrawn the ban imposed on social media platforms late on Monday night. So far, three ministers including Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak have resigned in Nepal. While four more ministers are ready to resign by evening. It is expected that KP Sharma Oli’s government may fall. The Prime Minister has called an all-party meeting at 6 pm.
The situation is still very tense in some parts of the capital. Curfew has been imposed in Kathmandu, Kaski (Pokhara), Rupandehi district and some parts of Sunsari district of Nepal. In the capital Kathmandu, thousands of youth including school students took out a march in Maitighar and Baneshwor areas early in the morning.
The protesting students had accused the government of serious corruption and suppressing freedom of expression by banning 26 social media platforms including Facebook, WhatsApp and X. During this, the protest turned violent when the protesters broke the police barricades near the Parliament House. At first the local police tried everything possible to stop the protesters but when the situation went out of control, the army was deployed.
